Daily Sports Smile: Atlanta Braves shortstop Dansby Swanson, USWNT star Mallory Pugh announce engagement
It has been a special two months for Atlanta Braves star Dansby Swanson. The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft just won the World Series. Now, he is engaged to his longtime girlfriend and U.S. women's national soccer team star Mallory Pugh.
“Forever with you,” Pugh wrote after sharing the announcement.
The power couple have been dating since 2017. Swanson proposed this week as both shared the news on their Instagram accounts. The couple met through Swanson’s former teammate and Milwaukee Brewers infielder Jace Peterson.
Peterson is married to Pugh’s sister Brianna. Swanson told Sporting News in 2019 that meeting Pugh changed his life.
“When we met was after the worst year of my life, and that completely did a 180,” Swanson said. “For whatever reason, there’s a reason. You may not see it when you’re going through it, but then all of a sudden the floodgates open up. It’s pretty awesome.”
Swanson turned in a career season with the Braves. He played in 160 games and hit a career-best 27 home runs. He also drove in 88 runs and played stellar defense.
In Game 6 of the World Series, Swanson hit a crucial home run to propel the Braves to a 7-0 victory and their first championship since 1995.
Pugh was in attendance for the clinching game. She is a terrific athlete in her own right as she stars for the Chicago Red Stars in the National Women’s Soccer League.
Pugh wasn't selected for the U.S. team at the Tokyo Olympics. However, she is still on the national team and has a bright future at 23 years old.
Now, both athletes are the latest sports power couple to get engaged.
