Daily Sports Smile: NBA teams partner with special program to develop student math skills
Several NBA teams are helping generate educational opportunities for students. The Houston Rockets and Sacramento Kings are the latest teams to open NBA Math Hoops training sessions this year. The program aims to teach fundamental math skills through basketball.
Through the program, students learn math skills through a comprehensive basketball digital board game. The curriculum is developed and aligned with Common Core State Standards and 21st Century Learning Skills.
Learn Fresh, a nonprofit organization, manages the NBA Math Hoops program and aims to inspire STEM education for students.
The Rockets have two training sessions planned on January 20. Educators will learn the program and help students utilize statistics to boost math and social-emotional learning skills.
The Kings will have a similar event. Educators are encouraged to enroll their elementary and middle school classes (K-8) in the program.
In December, NBA Math Hoops hit the road for a special tour. Representatives met with students in Cleveland and New Orleans. There are more planned trips to NBA arenas to promote the special program.
This season, NBA Math Hoops has programs across the country. According to their website, students improved their math fluency by 35% during the 2020-2021 school year. Educators also reported that the program helped make math more accessible in the classroom.
