Daily Sports Smile: Jaguars captains revealed in special video tribute
New Jaguars coach Urban Meyer sparked joy in Jacksonville with a surprise for some of his team leaders.
Meyer, who has won at multiple collegiate stops, took over an NFL franchise that won just one game last season. He then drafted franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence first overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, sparking optimism from fans, and added NFL veterans to lead a young core.
On Wednesday, Meyer and his staff had another decision to make, and they did it with some heart.
The team selected its captains: Lawrence, linebacker Myles Jack, safety Rayshawn Jenkins, offensive lineman Brandon Linder, EDGE rusher Josh Allen, cornerback Shaquill Griffin and receiver Marvin Jones Jr.
However, Meyer didn’t just tell the players. The front office enlisted their friends and family to share the special moment.
“This falls under 1A or 1B of things I love to do, and that is introduce the captains of our team,” Meyer said in a video shared by the Jaguars official team account.
In the video, each captain received heartwarming messages from their loved ones. Meyer also presented them with a jersey as they were celebrated by teammates with smiles all around.
Several captains were greeted with endearing support from their children and spouses. Griffin received a special congrats from his twin brother and Miami Dolphins linebacker Shaquem Griffin. The brothers played three seasons together with the Seattle Seahawks after leaving UCF.
“What’s up everybody, I got a special message for Shaq Griffin,” Shaquem said. “I want to say congratulations as the Jaguars selected you to be the team captain this year. Hey man, it is a huge honor. New faces, new places. You are there still leading by example and still bring the team along with you.
“That is a blessing. I know the boys are rocking with you and I can’t wait to see how the season unfolds. Just know, I’m still rooting for you and rooting for all you guys. Have a helluva season. Congratulations again bro, love you.”
The Jaguars face the Houston Texans at 1 p.m. ET Sunday. The game will be televised on CBS.
