Spencer Rattler transfer speculation increases after Oklahoma Sooners Instagram antics
Where will Spencer Rattler play next season?
The Oklahoma quarterback, who was recently benched as the starter for the Sooners, set off a new round of speculation earlier this week when he briefly took "@ OU" after the word "Quarterback" out of his Instagram profile before reinserting it.
What does it all mean?
No one but Rattler likely knows for sure, but speculation ran rampant after Rattler's brief social media account change.
Rattler was recently benched in favor of freshman Caleb Williams, who has shined in his limited action as the Sooners' new starting quarterback.
Williams has 609 yards passing and six touchdowns on the season, with no interceptions.
Rattler threw for 1,371 yards, 10 touchdowns and had five interceptions before behind benched for Oklahoma.
Bro Bible speculated that Rattler's Instagram move was a sign that the quarterback was going to transfer from Oklahoma.
Grayson Weir wrote: "The decision to remove “@ OU” from his social media biography makes his future plans as clear as can be. Rattler does not plan to be at Oklahoma much longer. He did end up adding “@ OU” Back to his bio not long after reports began to circulate about the change. Technically, he is still a quarterback at Oklahoma. But why would he remove “@ OU” in the first place? He knew exactly what he was doing."
Fansided suggested that Rattler's antics on Instagram showed how he really felt about the school, and Williams, reporting that he also unfollowed his teammate on the site.
Kyle Qualls wrote: "From the moment that Caleb Williams, who has already put himself into the Heisman conversation despite not playing until Week 6, took over, Rattler inevitably was headed for the transfer portal at some point. The big question for the present, though, was how Rattler would respond while still a member of the Sooners. Him unfollowing Williams on Instagram is another indication of how he feels about the Oklahoma football program, his teammate starting at quarterback, and the situation at hand. There have been moments of Rattler seemingly doing the right things, even returning to the field against Texas to notch a two-point conversion. However, unfollowing Williams makes it abundantly clear what his real feelings are."
Heartland College Sports wrote that Rattler was sending a message with his Instagram actions.
Pete Mundo wrote: "It’s certainly not ideal that Rattler is already sending messages like this on social media, as it could be a sign he’s already checked out from the program. Did it give us a glimpse into what’s going on in his mind? Or is it just a young player frustrated and dealing with major adversity for the first time in his career? Regardless, Rattler clearly plans on playing somewhere next season, whether it’s the NFL, at OU or somewhere else in college football remains to be seen."
Speculation will likely continue to follow Rattler and his future for the rest of the season.
His father, Mike Rattler, recently talked about his son having options and included returning to Oklahoma among them, as well as potentially entering the NFL Draft or transferring to another school.
Returning to Oklahoma is looking like a further longshot every day, however, and several schools, including Arizona State and Arizona, have been mentioned as possible landing spots for the former Arizona high school standout should he decide to transfer.
What will Rattler decide to do?
