Tuesday will be busy opening night for Arizona's college basketball programs
The college basketball season is here, and just about every team in Arizona is in action on Tuesday. Here's a rundown of the opening-night action:
—Bobby Hurley starts his seventh season coaching the Arizona State men, who get the first tipoff of the night, a 5 p.m. home game against Portland. ASU will have two more home games after that before its first big test at San Diego State Nov. 18.
—The ASU women are next at Desert Financial Arena with an 8 p.m. matchup with Northern Colorado. On Friday, the Sun Devils will honor Briann January's No. 20 when Minnesota visits.
—Last year's national finalist Arizona, which begins the season ranked No. 22 in the preseason AP women's basketball poll, will begin their quest for another memorable season by hosting Cal State Northridge at 5 p.m. The WBCA coaches thinks more highly of the Wildcats, placing UA at No. 15 in their preseason rankings.
—Following that game, the Tommy Lloyd era begins officially in Tucson as UA takes on Northern Arizona at 8:30 p.m.
—At 7 p.m. the GCU Arena will be rocking with Havocs as Grand Canyon starts down the road to what it hopes will be back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances. The Lopes open against Grambling State.
—Two programs will be fashionably late to the party. The GCU women's team opens at 6 p.m. Wednesday with a home game against Arizona Christian. Then on Friday, the NAU women travels to Washington State for a 3 p.m. tip.
