Arizona State (2-1) at San Diego State (1-1)
Site: Desert Financial Arena
Time: 8:30 p.m.
TV: CBS Sports Network. Radio: ESPN 620 AM/98.7 FM
Last meeting: The teams played on Dec. 10 last season in Tempe with San Diego State prevailing 80-68.
About the Sun Devils: ASU is coming off a 72-63 win over North Florida but there was bad news out of that one, with sophomore F Marcus Bagley (10 ppg 4rpg) leaving early in the first half after aggravating a knee injury that had slowed him in the lead-up to the season. Senior Kimani Lawrence (16.7 ppg, 9.3 rpg) has recorded two double-doubles in the first three games, continuing on his strong showing during the stretch run last season. G Luther Muhammad (10.5 ppg, 6 rpg) is expected to return after missing one game due to a violation of team policy. The most improved area has been rebounding with the Sun Devils plus 7.6 in that category after being a minus 7.6, 332nd among Division teams last season.
About the Aztecs: The Aztecs are coming off a 66-60 loss to Brigham Young. Their victory was over UC Riverside, the team that beat ASU last week. San Diego State is coming off a 23-5 showing in 2020-21 which included a 14-3 mark and first-place finish in the Mountain West. The Aztecs lost their top player in Matt Mitchell but they gained a suitable replacement in Matt Bradley, a transfer from Cal who was one of the premier players in the Pac-12 the past three years. He has averaged 15.5 points in the first two games with senior G Trey Pulliam (13.5 ppg, 2.5 apg) and senior F Nathan Mensah (13 ppg, 9 rpg) also in double figures.
