Memphis receives one vote in USA Today Coaches' poll. Did Arkansas State show love?
Maybe it was Arkansas State coach Butch Jones, who is one of the 65 coaches voting this season. Perhaps it was a nod of respect after the Tigers (2-0) defeated the Red Wolves 55-50 despite allowing two late touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Either way, the vote returned Memphis to the outer edges of the coaches poll. The Tigers didn't receive votes in the preseason coaches poll for the first time in six seasons.
Memphis did not, however, receive any votes in this week's Associated Press Top 25 poll.
The Tigers will take that lone coaches poll vote into Saturday's matchup against Mississippi State (3 p.m., ESPN2) at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. The Bulldogs (2-0) received nine votes in the coaches poll this week after defeating North Carolina State 24-10.
Memphis and Mississippi State have not faced each other since 2011.
