Tennessee basketball rolls North Carolina 89-72 behind Zakai Zeigler, guard trio
UNCASVILLE, Conn. — Zakai Zeigler lost the ball 30 feet from the hoop Sunday against North Carolina.
The Tennessee basketball guard gathered it, then took a quick left-handed dribble to cross over UNC guard RJ Davis. He slipped to the rim, gliding a layup off the glass and drawing a foul.
Zeigler slid and pumped his fist when he came to a stop. Kennedy Chandler flexed as he ran to Zeigler. Santiago Vescovi smiled and bumped Zeigler’s chest.
Tennessee’s trio of point guards dominated individually and collectively against North Carolina, propelling the Vols to an 89-72 win at the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament.
Chandler, Vescovi and Zeigler combined for 49 points, 16 assists, 12 rebounds and four turnovers for No. 17 Tennessee (3-1) against the No. 20 Tar Heels (3-2).
Zeigler had 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting and 3-for-5 3-point shooting. Vescovi had 17 points and nine rebounds. Chandler had 14 points, eight assists and five rebounds.
It was Tennessee's second win against North Carolina in program history and the first since 1949.
John Fulkerson shines
Tennessee's guards stole the show, but John Fulkerson looked like vintage John Fulkerson against North Carolina.
The senior forward made fading jumpers, cut to the rim for layups and scored effectively. He had 13 points on 6-for-7 shooting.
Josiah-Jordan James sits out, Justin Powell starts
Josiah-Jordan James did not play for Tennessee against the Tar Heels. The junior guard had flu-like symptoms and was not on the UT bench.
James is averaging 4.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
Justin Powell started in James’ place. He had eight poionts.
Tennessee hosts Tennessee Tech (2-1) on Friday (3 p.m. ET, SEC Network+) at Thompson-Boling Arena.
