Not surprisingly, St. Xavier's defending Division I champion Bombers lead the initial Ohio high school football poll as voted on by statewide media. The Bombers are 4-0 with wins over Lakota West, Colerain, Olentangy Liberty and Penn (Indiana). They face fourth-ranked Moeller on Friday at the University of Cincinnati's Nippert Stadium.

"You can throw polls away," St. Xavier coach Steve Specht said. "I laugh when people talk about polls. I just refer back to 2016 when we were 5-5 and we ended up winning a state championship. The polls are for the media and the fan bases and I think it's neat for the community. But ask our kids will tell you, we're 0-0 this week."

St. Xavier Bombers running back Charles Kellom (20) reacts after a touchdown against Colerain in the first half at Colerain High School Aug. 27, 2021.

Moeller is likewise 4-0 with wins over Lakota East, Chaminade-Julienne, East Central (Indiana) and Ironton. Lakota West, who just shut out Princeton, comes in at No. 8 in Division I while Lakota East received votes.

In Division II, La Salle of the Greater Catholic League-South is at No. 2 with their only blemish coming from nationally-ranked IMG. The Lancers defeated Louisville Trinity last Friday. Undefeated Kings is at No. 4 having beaten Anderson 35-28 last Friday.

La Salle's Dylan Eddings (82) makes a touchdown reception for the Lancers, Sept. 3, 2021.

In Division III, Badin leads the locals at No. 3 with Ross at No. 7.

Wyoming is second behind Van Wert in Division IV. Van Wert beat the Cowboys in the state semifinals last season. Undefeated McNicholas of the GCL-Coed comes in at No. 7 after defeating the Highlands Bluebirds of Fort Thomas Friday.  Clinton-Massie of the Southern Buckeye Conference is 10th.

Wyoming running back C.J.Hester runs for a touchdown during their scrimmage against Northwest, Thursday, Aug. 12, 2021.

Undefeated Mariemont is the top Southwest District team in Division V at No. 7, with Cincinnati Hills League rival Reading (4-0) at No. 9. Roger Bacon did receive some votes. There is currently no local representation in Divisions VI, nor VII.
