Matt Herges out as pitching coach as Diamondbacks shuffle coaching staff
The Diamondbacks began reshaping their coaching staff this week, informing several coaches they will not return — or will be back in different roles — for the 2022 season, a source confirmed on Thursday.
Pitching coach Matt Herges, co-hitting coaches Drew Hedman and Rick Short and bench coach Luis Urueta will not return in their previous roles.
First base coach Dave McKay, third base coach Tony Perezchica and bullpen coach Mike Fetters will return to work under manager Torey Lovullo, who last month had his contract extended through next season.
Quality control coach/catching coach Robby Hammock will not have his contract renewed.
Urueta, the bench coach the past two seasons, was offered another position, as yet undetermined, on the big league staff.
Herges, who spent the past two years with the Diamondbacks, presided over a pitching staff that struggled mightily, posting the second-worst ERA in the majors since the start of 2020. He was offered another job in the organization.
Hedman and Short, who took over midseason after the firings of hitting coach Darnell Coles and assistant Eric Hinske, both are said to be candidates to return, though the team has yet to determine how it will dole out hitting coach responsibilities next season.
Coles and Hinske were removed with the Diamondbacks hitting .231/.305/.380 through the season’s first 63 games. After the final 99 games, those numbers improved modestly to .240/.311/.384, though the team also went through a variety of roster moves that make direct comparisons tricky.
Hammock, a former Diamondbacks player and minor league manager, departs after a history of success helping shape the club’s catchers. In five seasons on staff, he helped veteran catchers, including Chris Iannetta, Alex Avila and Stephen Vogt, post better receiving numbers than they had earlier in their careers.
