Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said Monday that it would be crazy for a National Football League team with a head coaching vacancy not to strongly consider hiring Chiefs offensive coordinator and former Cincinnati Bengals running back and kick returner Eric Bieniemy.

Mahomes told KCSP 610 Sports that he talked to Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson about "who coach Bieniemy is and what kind of coach he is, what kind of man he is and how I think that he handles himself."

"(Bieniemy's) track record speaks for itself," Mahomes added in the radio interview. "The type of man he is, the way he can control and be a leader of the locker room and the way that he coaches and schemes he brings to us. If he doesn’t (get a position as a head coach), people are crazy."

Watson reportedly pushed for the Texans to interview Bieniemy - in part based on Mahomes' recommendation.

The Texans didn't interview Bieniemy as several other teams did before the initial interview window for him closed Sunday, but reportedly did request an interview with Bieniemy this week. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday via Twitter that Houston isn't permitted to interview him until the Chiefs lose in the playoffs or after the Super Bowl, whichever comes first.

The Texans also reportedly will interview Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator and former Bengals coordinator Leslie Frazier.

Peter King wrote Monday in his Football Morning in America column that he thinks "if Bieniemy is passed over again," he expects "players will be very vocal about it."
